An independent documentary about the alternative music scene in Slovakia

What makes a music scene? What is the state of Slovakia’s music industry? How does one define success? Can music earn you a living? In what ways can Slovak musicians contribute to the scene abroad? Rather than divide, we seek to connect and unify. We’d love to show you the scene we believe in. Thank you for your support!

Our vision

OSTROV HUDBY Film is a documentary that presents the contemporary alternative music scene in Slovakia to an international audience.

Our goal is to document the music scene outside of the mainstream, dramaturgically following the Ostrov hudby compilation and the idea behind it. It is an English-language film meant to appeal to the foreign viewer. We want to support the Slovak “island of music” by helping it gain a following beyond the borders of our small country.

We want to uncover the scene’s roots, introduce the festivals, club scene, labels and fans and create an audiovisual snapshot of the time we live in. We want to capture the scene that inspires us. The documentary took about 1,200 hours to make and its production began in the summer of 2017. The documentary was premiered in January 2019 at Eurosonic Festival in the Netherlands and now is available for free on YouTube. Let us all spread the word about Slovak music.
